The Mortality of Love

I believe that this poem emphasizes the mortality of love by the narration of the immortal Time. The promise of the lover seems reminiscent of all the literary promises of love, as I believe the author intended it to sound. It adds a sense of the repetition of life to the poem, as if Time has heard thousands of lovers say this, and each has been wrong. It is the concurring trope of mankind to forget the unrelenting march of time in the face of love, yet this poem patiently reminds us, again and again, of the pattern of the past and the promise of the future: That all love has come to an end, and all love will come to an end.
