I believe that people who truly did not believe in the Lord in the past hid this because of social pressure. Before the rise of the internet, people lived in small towns. The majority of these people believed in the same faith. Therefore, the outliers felt alone in their differing views as thus kept quiet.
Now, however, the internet allows everyone from all around the world to voice opinions. The "outliers" can talk with thousands of others who share the same views. This, I believe, has given agnostics, atheists, and such the validation they needed to have the courage to speak their minds truthfully.
